Quick Virus Cleanup Tips
First, if your machine can still get online, try to download and install the following:
If you can’t get online with the infected machine, go to a friends computer and copy the applications to a thumb drive if you have one.
If the virus has infected your machine to the point that you can’t install any of these programs, then try installing them in safe mode.To get to safe mode, reboot your machine, after seeing the hardware vendor’s logo, (i.e. Dell, HP, Toshiba, etc) start pressing F8 on your keyboard.
You should then be presented with a menu. Safe Mode should be an option in the menu, please select it.
Install CCleaner and let it run. This will clear Windows “gunk” that gets built up over time (i.e. old log files, temporary internet files, etc). You can check and uncheck the items it clears. Running this can speed up the spyware scanners that you will run next.
Then install and run Malwarebytes. This is a spyware scanner. It will help if you can update the scanner. If you can’t, just run with what you have and you can try to update it later. (note: you will not be able to get online with Safe Mode, unless you choose Safe Mode with Networking).
Then do the same for Spybot Search & Destroy. Remeber to update if you can.
The last program is Dr. Web’s CureIt. You will not need to install this as it is a stand alone executable (one time scanner). Run this as well.
